Left the business accounting world in 1981 when I became a single parent. My passion for cars led me to open "Carburetors Unlimited" in Simi Valley, Calif. in 1981 and I have been active in this business since then. I moved it to San Diego, Calif. in 1988 and then to Phoenix, AZ in 2005. I have been lucky enough to work on and own most of the types of cars seen on the Barrett Jackson Auctions.
I have one Son who also lives in the Phoenix area. I have two wonderful Grand kids 17 & 18 and a fantastic Daughter-in-Law. They are both successful in Real Estate even in these hard times.
I'm hooked on the outdoors. I'm in a truck and camper in the Mountains as much as I can fishing pole and camera in hand.
Pretty much lost everything due to the real estate mess here in Arizona. National statistics don't really reflect the devaluation happening here. In many areas it is more than 70 %.
It's OK as I'm still healthy and loving what I do. I also know that throughout my life God has never closed a door i needed to be open even if I was unsure which one it was. It is truly amazing what faith can do and I am living proof.

MEMORIAL FOR BR. ART HORTZE

Our little sister Rosalyn Stern Krause brought the ashes of our Brother Art Hortze to a memorial luncheon at Pancho's Restaurant in Manhattan Beach this Monday July 25th, 2011. It was the kind of occasion that Uncle Artie would have liked - those of us who attended did.

Uncle Artie's ashes were in the white box with a shot of Johnny Walker Black Label scotch supplied by Br. Gary Fredburg. The Phi Delta Psi candlestick was used during the 50th Reunion of our Brotherhood. So that you know we were true Phi Delts, each of us drank a little of the scotch for Artie.

Jerry Fecht with the hat begins the reading of The Mourners' Kaddish, supplied by Rosalyn Stern Krause. The hat was passed as each Brother at the table read part of the traditional Jewish prayer for the dead. Left to right: Bros. The house in Manhattan Beach where several of our Brothers lived after graduating from college. It was decided that it would be good place to overlook the ashes of our Brother Art Hortze.

Death of Art Hortze July 2011

It is with great sadness that I share this with you. Our dear friend and Fraternity Brother Art Hortze has died. Art died in Las Vegas, Nevada after a long struggle with cancer.

Brother Arthur Hortze, who liked to be called “Uncle Artie”, was born on the 16th of July 1941 in Newark, New Jersey. He attended Long Beach Polytechnic and Van Nuys High Schools. Prior to enrolling in Los Angeles Valley College, Art served in the United States Marine Corps.

Arthur Felix Hortze was initiated into the Phi Delta Psi Fraternity in the Fall of 1959.

Uncle Arties was employed for many years by the National Tool and Gage Company. Before his illness, he was an insurance and long term care agent for Blue Cross - Blue Shield of North Carolina and for Physician's Mutual.

About a year and a half ago, our Alpha Chapter Little Sister, Rosalyn Krause discovered that Art was living in bad conditions in an obscure Montana town. She and several of our Alpha Brothers assisted Art’s move to Las Vegas, Nevada to be near medical help.

Brother Gary Fredburg, Roz and I will put together an opportunity to commemorate Uncle Artie’s life among us in the near future. If you would like to be notified of the event, give me a call at The Museum:

DISCOVERING OUR VALLEY 2011

Once flag football was a serious thing for the college boys of Pierce College. Games were played regularly between clubs. Matches between the fraternities, and in the case of this photograph between chapters of the local Fraternity Phi Delta Psi were serious matters. Few people came to watch the games, but that mattered little. What did matter was the experience.

The best game that I saw at Pierce was played right after it rained. The Fraternity boys were covered in mud, shirts torn, a black eye and even a dislocated shoulder. On the way to the emergency hospital, the fellow with the damaged shoulder said to me that he had "never had so much fun in his life".

Brother John Caminiti is a 1959 graduate of Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California. He was initiated into the Phi Delta Psi Fraternity in the Fall of 1962. He served the Brotherhood as the Sergeant at Arms for Beta Chapter. John holds a Masters degree from California State University Northridge. He served in the United States Army, First Cavalry Division from 1966 to 1968.

Brother Caminiti for many years was a mathematics teacher and wrestling coach at Tehachapi High School. He and his former wife Terry have four children; Steve, Scott, Chris, and Katie. In 2011, John is retired.

John wrote in 2004: "I live a great life. My fiancée and I dance, camp, travel, attend spiritual retreats, and have fun with the grandkids. Also I am involved with Brazilian Ju-Jitsu, which explains why I recently had to have rotator cuff surgery at Kerlan and Jobe. I am a very lucky fella."

Brother Ross Louis Hanover was born on the 7th of May in Bell, California. He is a graduate of James Monroe High School in the San Fernando Valley. We do not have a record of his year and semester that he pledged Phi Delta Psi Fraternity at Pierce College.

Brother Ross was an f-4 pilot in the United States Navy.

AN INTERVIEW WITH MARY HIGHT

I hope that many of you remember Brother Brad Hight. He certainly was one of the great guys of his time. This last week, as part of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley's Narrating Lives - Oral Histories of the San Fernando Valley, I had the honor of interviewing Mary Hight, Brad's mother.
Mary, who is in her mid-90s is as bright as a clock and still a beautiful lady. Many a Phi Delt bar-b-que was held at the Hight ranch on Roscoe street in Northridge. Visiting with Mary made Brad's memory vivid in my mind. He was one of the good guys, and his mom Mary is one of great ladies.

DELTA CHAPTER Br. BILL DANTON

Brother Bill Danton was born in 1943. He was initiated into the Delta Chapter of the Phi Delta Psi in the Fall of 1961.

After leaving LACC he attended Cal State Northridge, then OCS in Newport, Rhode Island. Bill served 3 years in the United States Navy, including one year in Vietnam as a diving officer.

On his return to the United States Brother Danton Attended the University of Houston earning both a Master of Arts and Ph.D. degrees. He then completed a one year internship with the San Francisco Veterans Administration. After his internship, Bill moved to Lake Tahoe, where he lived for 21 years. "Most of my career was at the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System, where I retired ... as Associate Chief of Staff for Mental Health."

"I have a private practice in clinical psychology and consult to a couple of employee assistance programs, including DRG. I am President of the Nevada State Psychological Assoc and have produced a DVD for golfers "Tools for Your Mental Game" (temp website = www.golfersedgeusa.com).

Bill's wife Susan is an RNFA (First Assist) for a plastic surgeon in Reno.

He has also authored other 30 professional articles and publications. In addition, Bill Danton is establishing the only accredited psychological intern program in Nevada within an EAP organization at Dynamic Resource Group, Inc.

Here's a great snapshot of Br. Bill Lundy from his Facebook page. Bill pledged the Delta Chapter of Phi Delta Psi at Los Angeles City College, but I'm not sure of the year. He was in the US Naval Reserve and was, I believe, stationed in Newport, Rhode Island.

I had lunch with Br. Al Conahan today at Jerry's Deli in Woodland Hills. After our meal, Al gave The Museum of the San Fernando Valley a great old, battle worn, Phi Delta Psi sweatshirt, and a gift to The Museum from Br. Clay Koerner in Bakersfield. Clay sent a bound book of Pierce College Round Up newspaper from 1964 to 1965.

I recall Bob Puccini, but other than his initiation into our Fraternity at Pierce College, I know little more about him. My notes say that he was in the insurance business and that he graduated from Birmingham High School.
The recent acquisition of a 1961 Birmingham High School "Tomahawk" yearbook narrows down the likely time he pledged Beta Chapter. Since he graduated high school in 1961, he may have pledged that same Fall.

When The Museum receives anything, an immediate effort is made to document its arrival. Today, March 5th we acquired two year books from Birmingham High School. I looked through the senior class pictures to see if any of our Phi Delt brothers were there. Here's a great photograph of Br Michale Tozzi just before he pledged the Beta Chapter of our Brotherhood. No doubt he looks a lot like this photograph 50 years later.

Brother Bob Malone 1960

Brother Robert Malone was born in 1942 in New York state. He graduated from Birmingham High School in the San Fernando Valley in June of 1960. (The photo above was taken at that time.)

Brother Malone was initiated into the Phi Delta Psi Fraternity in the Spring of 1961.

When Bob finished his studies at Pierce College, he transferred to CSUN where he earned his Bachelor's degree and later a California State Teaching Credential. He worked during college at a decorative glass company, making customized mirrors. Later he taught elementary school in Saugus and in the nearby Sulphur Springs School District. He retired from teaching after 28 years.

Bob and his wife Lynetter hare two sons Robert K. Malone III and Matthew. Bob's chief interests lie in computers, technology, cooking, current events and music.

This week The Museum of the San Fernando Valley received two "Tomahawk" yearbooks from Birmingham High School. This is a senior picture of Br. Stu Olster, who looked here very much like he did when he was among the founders of Phi Delta Psi's Gamma Chapter at San Fernando Valley State College. Later the chapter became the highly successful Pi Kappa Tau, with Br. Olster as a major leader.

Brother Bob Robar was born on the 29th of April in Bakersfield, California. He was initiated into the Brotherhood of Phi Delta Psi in the Fall of 1957.

Bob served our Fraternity as a founder of and President of Beta Chapter at Los Angeles Pierce College.

Br. Robert Robar - 2011

After Pierce College, Bob went to work for Rocketdyne in its Advanced Design Department. He was in a program where the employee worked for one year, then went back to school for a year to get an engineering degree in 8 years. Because of the instability of the aerospace industry Bob made a career change. In April 1960 and went on the Los Angeles City Fire Department.

In November 1961, while awaiting induction into military service, Bob joined the United States Navy Reserves in North Hollywood. Later he transferred to a Submarine unit in Long Beach. In January 1963 he went on active duty and was sent to New London, Connecticut for Submarine School. Bob graduated 5th in the class and was assigned to the USS Abraham Lincoln, SSBN. (Submarine Service Ballistic Nuclear) This was ballistic missile sub stationed out of Holy Lock, Scotland. After 2 tours of the Blue Crew, he was promoted and reassigned to the USS John Marshall on which he served as a navigator.

After his military service, Br. Robar returned the Los Angeles City Fire Department, where he served for 32 years rising to the rank of Captain II. He was promoted to Captain I in 1973, and Captain II in 1979. Bob. He worked at various locations throughout Los Angeles and moved to Fire Station 96 in Chatsworth in 1982. He remained at that station until he retired in June 1992 after 32+ years.

In 1966, he married Susanna Shutz. Bob and Susanna are active in their church as teachers. The Robars still live in the home they purchased through our Founder Doug West (real estate broker) in 1970.

Robert Robar is a trustee of Anchor Education Foundation, overseeing the Maple Leaf Endowment Fund.

Brother Richard Ennis was born on the 29th of January, 1944 in San Francisco, California. He was initiated into the Phi Delta Psi Fraternity in the Fall of 1963. Richard served the Brotherhood as President of the Alpha Chapter.

In 2011, Richard is semi-retired as an investment advisor to large pension and endowment funds. He relocated to Chicago in 1975. In 1980 he and allies formed Ennis, Knupp and Associates. Today the company has about 40 professionals and a total staff of 60. The firm advises over a 100 clients with over $300 billion in assets. - Richard graduated from California State University Northridge in 1968 and holds an MBA from UCLA. He served in the California National Guard. -

Br. Richard Ennis and his wife have three sons: John (a film maker), Colin (Berklee College of Music) and Ryan (Lake Forest College). In 2004, Sally and Richard had been married for 35 years.

Richard's father John Ennis was an attorney who protected the Fraternity on several occasions.

PLEDGE DAN MILLER AND FAMILY

One of the most beloved, non active/alumni member of the Phi Delta Psi and the Maple Leaf Society is "Pledge" Dan Miller (here shown with his wife Shirley) and two daughters. Pledge Miller was adopted into our Brotherhood by our guys in their Manhattan Beach days. For many of our Alpha Brothers and Beta Br. Jerry Olson, it wouldn't be a party with Dan and Shirley there.

Richard Carleton Davis (1939 - 2011)

(1939-2011) After a full life, Richard Carleton Davis (Dick) passed away early Monday, Jan. 17, 2011 after a courageous battle with Valley Fever.
He was surrounded by those he loved most. Born Nov. 8, 1939 in Southgate, Calif., Dick was adopted by Dudley and Helen Davis. At age seven his father had to leave for work in Guam, leaving Dick and his younger sister Linda to be raised by their mother on the family's lemon farm in Chatsworth. It was during this period that Dick developed a lifelong love affair with nature, taking long hikes into Brown's Canyon, and sleeping under the stars when he had to smudge the lemon orchard. He even had a pet alligator and taught himself falconry from an egg he recovered from a nest himself. The enormous responsibility of helping run the family farm helped forge Dick's tireless work ethic and creative problem solving ability, two qualities that came to define him.
Endlessly inquisitive, he spent a good deal of time in trouble for taking anything and everything mechanical apart to study how it worked. Dick joined the Coast Guard at age 17 before graduating high school. As an avid fan of Jazz, he taught himself to play the drums and used every free weekend to go ashore and see all the great Jazz musicians perform live. After the Coast Guard, Dick attended the Art Center College of Design where he continued to develop his natural talent as an illustrator and painter.

A graceful dancer, Dick taught professionally for a time before moving into high-rise construction where he became an expert at assessing and bidding on new jobs. During this period he spent a great deal of time developing his art, working in a variety of mediums including sculpture and photography.
As a hobby Dick would take cars apart and fix them often fabricating and combining parts to make all new designs of his creation. His varied skills and unmistakable genius led him to his final career at the Metropolitan Water District where he worked his way up to Senior Engineering Technician in the Safety of Dams Division. Always creative, Dick was proud of several accomplishments including the design and fabrication of a custom machine vital to the rehabilitation of observation wells and a mobile water pump station capable of putting out fires where trucks would have trouble accessing.

It was during this time in the early 1970s that he met the great love of his life, Jeanne Darlene Krowel, an elementary school teacher. They courted for two years before being married Sept. 2, 1974. On Dec. 11, 1976 they had their first son, Scott Edward Davis. The last addition to the family came on Oct. 22, 1979, with the birth of their second son, Mark William Davis. In 1987 the family moved from Woodland Hills to Simi Valley so that Jeanne and the children could be closer to their friends and work. The new home in Simi Valley represented a blank canvas to Dick, and he went straight to work designing, planning, and building a home that reflected both his artistic genius and vast skill set. He was always very proud that a contractor never set foot in his home. Dick retired in 2001 after 35 years of service to the district.

He continued to build and create, using his new wealth of free time to help Jeanne with her many school projects. In 2006 he began taking electric bass lessons, and formed a band with Jeanne and friends. This same year he began working on restoring and hot-rodding a 1956 F100. In 2007 he contracted Valley Fever.

Despite the fatigue and pain, he lived everyday with passion and purpose. He often said, "Learn the rules, and play better."

Richard is survived by his wife, Jeanne Davis, as well as his two sons, Scott and Mark Davis.
A visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28 at Reardon Mortuary. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. the following day, Jan. 29, at Reardon Mortuary, to be followed by burial at Oakwood Cemetery in Chatsworth. The family would appreciate in lieu of flowers that a donation be made to the U.C. Davis Department of Internal Medicine (Infectious Disease Research). Richard Carledon Davis

Brother Dick David was born on the 8th of November 1939. He was initiated into the Phi Delta Psi Fraternity in the Spring of 1958 and became founding member of our Brotherhood's Beta Chapter at Los Angeles Pierce College.

Richard Davis attended Art Center and practiced the fine arts for several years. He then went to work in construction and eventually became an executive for the Department of Water and Power.

Jeanne and Richard Davis had two sons, Scott and Mark. Jeanne is a much respected Ventura County educator.

TRI CHI PAUL ESTAVILLO

I met at lunch today with Paul Raymond Estavillo, who was once the President of the Tri Chi Fraternity at Pierce College. Our Beta Chapter Brothers. who knew Paul at Pierce thought he was a really fine man and a terrific student leader.

In 1972, after he returned from a stint in the US Air Force, Paul served as AMS president at Pierce and was chosen the school's Man of the Year. Competition from Tri Chi made the Phi Delts work harder and to try to "out class" them.

Today Paul is dedicated to Catholic education, having taught at St. Catherine of Siena in Reseda, Providence High School in Burbank and working at Villanova Prep in Ojai. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Archaeology and History from Cal. State University Northridge.

Paul will be working with The Museum to preserve Tri Chi history, our education programs and the arts. You might wish to check out his activities on Facebook Paul Raymond Estavillo.

THE NIGHT WE BECAME ALPHA AND BETA CHAPTERS

From the inception of the Phi Delta Psi Fraternity, we had brothers who attended both Valley and Pierce Colleges. Our meeting place on Topanga Canyon lent itself to the inclusion of Pierce students. As the Fraternity grew, the focus of school activities on two campuses became a burden. At last the decision was made to create two chapters. The original members were initiates of the Mother Chapter.
Here Brother Jerry Buttaccio accepts the lighted candle of Brotherhood from President Roy LoBianco Jr (in gray sweater). Fortunately, there were two candlesticks, one of which had been stored away.
In the background (left in red jacket) is Brother Ed Hart, next to the right is Brother John Valvo, and to the far right is Brother Jerry Cipperley. It was one of the most exciting nights in the history of the Maple Leaf Brotherhood.
Shortly after this photograph was taken, Jerry Buttaccio was elected Beta Chapter's first president.

The first unveiling of the Spring 1961 Pledge paddle. Handsome plaques were introduced into the Fraternity by the Mother Chapter Pledge Class of Fall 1957. They contained the names of each new Brother, a symbol of the Class' spirit and used the colors black and gold. They also represented the fact that paddling of pledges was unacceptable in the Phi Delta Psi. (photo 2239)

Ditch day was a beloved Pledge Brothers' tradition in the Phi Delta Psi Fraternity. Here the six Pledges of Spring 1967 announce their organized rebellion from their Pledge jobs, by presenting the Ditch Day skin to be placed in the Fraternity house (without getting caught) Often Ditch Day was accompanied by the kidnapping of favorite active members.

Br. Dick Mlack says: "2127: Guy with a white shirt and sitting on the floor on the far right is George Worthington. He was the Tri Chi president. He was a really nice guy, which is one of the reasons I think that we got along so well with the Tri Chi's".

I think all of these guys are Tri Chis

PHI DELT - TRI CHI POKER STAG 1961

Among the artifacts of the late Danton Burroughs were two Tri Chi fraternity photograph albums. They, as you might expect after 50 years were in pretty bad shape. The photos had been glued onto high acid content paper, and virtually none identified the people in the pictures. On occasion there were processing dates in the margins.
One series of photos was marked "Phi Delt" stag. Reviewing them, many of the young men in the pictures are indeed Brothers of Phi Delta Psi (Beta Chapter). The location of the stag is the Chi Chi Chi house, location unknown. Perhaps some of you may know the Tri Chis or unidentified Phi Delts in these rare pictures.

Among the treasure photos in the Archives of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley are these pictures taken by the Spring Phi Delta Psi Pledge Class of 1967 at Pierce College. The event, which appears to be a pledge class verses the active members of Beta Chapter, seems to have been a costumed water fight.
