Br. Art Hortze - February 2010
Brother Arthur Hortze was born on the 16th of July in Newark, New Jersey. He attended BOTH Long Beach Polytechnic and Van Nuys High Schools. ART was a member of the United States Marine Corps prior to his pledging. Brother Art Hortze was initiated into the Phi Delta Psi Fraternity in the Fall of 1959 at Los Angeles Valley College
Art was employed for many years by the National Tool and Gage Company. In 2004, he is an insurance and long term care agent for Blue Cross - Blue Shield of North Carolina and for Physician's Mutual. In 2010 "Uncle Artie", as he is affectionately called by his Fraternity Brothers, related to our Brotherhood that he is struggling with cancer. With the help of our little sister Rosalyn Stern and her family, Art has moved from Montana to Las Vegas to be closer to medical care.

Barone's Pizza at Woodman and Oxnard in Van Nuys (Valley Village). 1 pm (the 13th Hour) on the
3rd Thursday of the month. January 21st, 2010. Barone's food is great and reasonably priced. Parking is $1.50.
Lunch is a no-host affair, with anything left over after the bill and tip, going to the Maple Leaf Endowment Fund. This last month we added $22.

GETTING BROTHER FREDBURG'S GOAT OR GOATS

Brother Gary Fredburg and I were at the Pierce College Farm Center to set up an all-San Fernando Valley "spring-cleaning / garage sale" for Valley historical organizations, and took a walking tour of the facility. Both of us got the feeling that someone was looking at us. When Gary looked up he saw four goats checking out the world below.
Gary has been working diligently with Brothers Grady Talbot and me to build The Museum of the San Fernando Valley, and to create opportunities for our far flung Brothers to see one another.

Br. GARY FREDBURG ORGANIZES 23th HOUR LUNCHES

When asked at what time we should have our monthly Phi Delta Psi lunches, Br. Gary Fredburg looked amazed. "At the 13th hour, of course", he stated!
Brother Fredburg was initiated in the Alpha Chapter of Phi Delta Psi at Valley College in the Spring of 1962. He has been the Vice President of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley since its reorganization in 2005. Gary organized the historic postcard collection of The Museum.

Brother Gary Fredburg is looking into the possibility of having monthly Phi Delta Psi luncheons at Barroni's in Valley Glen.
Barroni's is now located just a couple of blocks west of Valley College (now called Valley Glen to make the area spiffier than Van Nuys)
Food is good and reasonably priced.
It will be a "whoever shows up, shows up" event.

One great thing about having a Conservative buddy like Br. Gary Fredburg is, that he will give me the shirt off his back.
Gary is one of the Museum's major treasure finders. Election time is the perfect time to find things that will teach future generations what the 2008 elections were like.

BIG SEA-CRUISE REUNION PLANNED FOR OCTOBER

Brothers Arnold Levy, Jerry McAlevey, Gary Fredburg and Jerry Fecht met today at the relocated Barrone's Restaurant in Valley Village (Van Nuys by Valley College). We discussed Arnie's plan for a sea-cruise reunion in October of this year. There will be lots of food, entertainment and places to get together to share our Phi Delt history. Stay tuned - more to come soon.

GARY FREDBURG'S PROJECT

By now most of us are aware that Br. Gary Fredburg has been very involved in the effort to bring about The Museum of the San Fernando Valley. As The Museum's Vice President, Gary does many jobs, not the least of which is the Chair of The Museum's Acquisitions Committee.
Gary's most recent fund-raising project is the creation of a History of the San Fernando Valley through Vintage Postcards. The postcard of Sportsmen's Lodge, featured above is an example of 70s Era. You might be interested in painlessly helping Gary's effort. Check through those old boxes in your attic or basement for pictures, postcards and other memorabilia related to Valley (and Phi Delt) history.
Scan items at a resolution of 300 and send them in the jpg format and send them as files to gfecht#sbcglobal. The Museum will give you ownership credit.

Brother Gary Fredburg wrote on this postcard, " Jerry, Is this Stan Cerveny's dad? Fredburg."

Answer: Gary, Br. Cerveny is sensitive about his ancestor the great Leoncavallo. Stan is also touchy about never being able to duplicate his ancestor's awesome mustache. Ruggero Leoncavallo died in 1919. Br. Cerveny has tried his best to sing the grand aria from Pagliacci in the shower.

JERRY BERNS MUSEUM DONATION

Jerry Berns - Tarzan Books Donation - 2008 - Archive of the Museum of the San Fernando Valley
To honor the memory of our great old friend, Danton Burroughs who died this last week, Br. Jerry Berns has donated eight first edition Edgar Rice Burroughs books to your Museum. Each of the books has an inscription written by Danton Burroughs to our Fraterntiy Brother in 1987.
Grady Talbot, Gary Fredburg and Jerry Fecht have been working to bring about The Museum of the San Fernando Valley for the last four years. Our goal is to bring about a full service Museum of history and culture for the San Fernando Valley. The Museum maintains extensive electronic archives, one of which is the Archive of the Phi Delta Psi Fraternity. (The photos on this Maple Leaf Brotherhood blog are part of this Archive.
The Museum is working with the Weddington Heritage Trust to preserve the historic Weddington House in North Hollywood. The City agreed with us, and the house is scheduled to be move to the north-west corner of North Hollywood Park on Chandler Boulevard. When the house is moved, within the next two months, the Museum will begin laying out our management plans for the house.

When Brother Gary Fredburg gave these raffle/admission tickets to the Museum tonight, I thought of Founder Steve Falk and Kit Slayter who belonged to this group. Remember it met in a barracks-like compound just off Balboa Boulevard at the Van Nuys Airport.

Gary E. Fredburg - 2008 - Archives of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley

Gary Earle Fredburg is the 272nd initiate of the Phi Delta Psi Fraternity, He joined our Alpha Chapter at Los Angeles Valley College in the Spring of 1962. He is a graduate of Van Nuys High School. After earning his Associate of Arts degree at Valley College, Gary transferred to Woodbury University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business in 1966.
Priot to his retirement in 2007, Gary was vice president for investments for UBS PaineWebber Inc. in Pasadena, California.
Brother Fredburg collects and sells rare printed materials. He is a Board member and Vice President of the Museum of the San Fernando Valley.
