THE NIGHT BETA CHAPTER WAS CREATED

The presence of the Phi Delta Psi ritual candle was already in place before the pledge class of Fall 1959 came into existence. Here Br. Gerald Buttaccio, the newly elected president of Beta Chapter accepts his chapter's candle and holder from President Rowland LoBianco. This candle stick is in the archives of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley.

THE NIGHT WE BECAME ALPHA AND BETA CHAPTERS

From the inception of the Phi Delta Psi Fraternity, we had brothers who attended both Valley and Pierce Colleges. Our meeting place on Topanga Canyon lent itself to the inclusion of Pierce students. As the Fraternity grew, the focus of school activities on two campuses became a burden.  At last the decision was made to create two chapters. The original members were initiates of the Mother Chapter.
Here Brother Jerry Buttaccio accepts the lighted candle of Brotherhood from President Roy LoBianco Jr (in gray sweater). Fortunately, there were two candlesticks, one of which had been stored away.
In the background (left in red jacket) is Brother Ed Hart, next to the right is Brother John Valvo, and to the far right is Brother Jerry Cipperley. It was one of the most exciting nights in the history of the Maple Leaf Brotherhood.
Shortly after this photograph was taken, Jerry Buttaccio was elected Beta Chapter's first president.

Brother Michael Padden pledged the Phi Delta Psi Fraternity in the Fall of 1957. He served the Brotherhood as President of Alpha Chapter. Mike worked. played and studied hard. He balanced his time carefully to care for his younger brother who was afflicted with cerebral palsy. Mike had a terrific singing voice and was part of the Alpha Chapter barber shop quartet. He had a college job at Sears, working in the garden department.
After Valley College, Mike went to work for the film studios as a model maker and became the Business Agent for the Model Makers Union of Hollywood.
Brother Mike Padden died of AIDS. His life partner Del Yuen stood by him until the end. Michael endowed the City of Hope in his will. He also paid for the planting of the California Redwood Grove at the entrance of Moorpark College, as a memorial to deceased Phi Delta Psi Brothers.

TED QUILLIN HON. BROTHER OF PHI DELTA PSI

Ted Quillin - Disk Jockey - Photo in the Archives of The Museum of the San Fernando Valley - 2008 - Gift of Gerald Fecht (click on picture to enlarge)

Hired to be a guest-speaker for a Phi Delta Psi "smoker", Ted Quillin became friends with Brothers Jerry Cipperly and Craig Pinkard. He was initiated as an Honorary Brother and took the honor very seriously. Ted is to this day beloved by the alumni of the Fraternity.
This photo was taken at Los Angeles Valley College. Phi Delts, who held the majority vote on the Student Council brought Ted to perform on campus. We also secured an on-campus concert by Louis Armstrong and Velma Middleton.
Ted still does a gig now in then in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he lives.
